The Masters: Pinemeadow Golf's Take on the Biggest Prize in Golf

As April approaches we get closer and closer to a number of things that excite golfers. Better weather and longer days, especially for us in the Northwest, are among the most relevant, but April also excites me because it is the kick off to golf’s first major, “The Masters".

Every golfer knows the week of the Masters to be the best golf event of the year. It’s tough to understand what it is that puts this competition in a category all its own, but golf and the Masters seem to go hand-in-hand. Could be the course? The Players? The Coverage? The Name-“Masters”? I’d like to think it’s probably a combination of it all.

Regardless, it is every professional golfers dream to win this event, and though there may be a handful who claim not to put too high a priority on it (highly doubtful), it is easy to imagine that achieving the most coveted victory in golf, and at last, putting on the Green Jacket is likely a good feeling- it would be hard to argue otherwise. Professional golfers view the Masters as the one major to win.

Here is a list of a few players that might have a chance of pulling off the dream this year. Of course Tiger, Phil and other past champions have their chance but I wanted to list a few first timers. Read on for our picks.

Chris DiMarco: So close to winning it last year and was in the race the year before. Great competitor and has been waiting a year to get another chance. Look for him to be on the leaderboard on Sunday in 06. Maybe he can follow up his ala mater (Florida) in the NCAA’s so far with a magical run of his own.

Rod Pampling: Fresh off a win at the Bay Hill a couple of weeks ago. He is primed and ready for his second chance at Augusta. Last year was his first and the pressured didn’t get to him finishing T5. Great scorer, will get his birdies but needs to stay out of trouble early.

Luke Donald: Another early winner this year at the Honda Classic. Ranks in the top 20 in both % of greens in regulation and fairways hit in ’06. An artist on the side, I expect Donald to paint a perfect path to contention on Sunday.

Chad Campbell:
This will be his 4th time at Augusta so he won't be a scared newcomer, and last year he finished a very respectable T17. While some of the other players get more media exposure than the Hilton Sisters, he just goes about his business calmly and quietly. So far in '06 he has made the cut in all nine events he has entered, and taken home the brass ring at the Bob Hope. 5th on the money list so far this year, look for him to vault to the top after getting fit for his first green jacket.

KJ Choi: A fourth timer at Augusta who has never missed a cut. In fact KJ has never finished worse than 33rd. In 04 he made a run at the championship title with a 3rd place finish. KJ seems to finding his form this season and with his precision iron play he should be a factor next week at Augusta.

Like most of us I will never hit a drive, make a putt at Augusta and the only green jacket I’ll wear in my lifetime is the one my dad gave me years ago, and it says nothing of my ability to golf. I can only enjoy another magical week in golf… which is good enough for me.

Enjoy the Masters!
April 3rd-9th.
